Why is the weight loss struggle so real?

I grapple with this question every time I see someone in my weight management clinic. Is the difficulty due to the foods we’re eating? Is exercise ineffective? Are some people genetically destined to have a hard time losing weight? 

The answers to all of these questions are complex, variable, and poorly understood. However, a recent study in Cell Metabolism suggests that ultra-processed foods may play a pivotal role in the “weight loss struggle.“

We know that gym memberships come with a cost. Likewise, avoiding the gym also comes with a price tag. In fact, we spend $117 billion per year on health care costs stemming from our inactivity as a society. Currently, only about 26% of men and 19% of women meet recommendations for physical activity. These numbers aren’t surprising. Time, money, motivation, and physical pain are understandable obstacles to exercise for many people.

Have you ever heard of kombucha? It’s a fermented tea that’s increasing in popularity due to its health benefits. It’s like tea mixed with vinegar with a loose piece of tissue floating in it—sounds appealing right? If Gatorade is the drink of athletes, kombucha is the unofficial drink of hipsters. If there were a hipster Olympics, with games like mustache twisting, latte art, and inexplicable scarf wearing—kombucha brands would surely line up to sponsor it. For the record, I can appreciate the beauty of a good latte leaf, but I’m NO hipster.
